Letters & Life Reflection
After reading the first two essays in the book, what seems to be at the heart of what Lott is getting at is that as writers and artists, the things that we create are made for God and with God. One idea that I found really interesting was when Lott said that as soon as someone only starts creating things to make money rather than creating through passion, then it no longer is a reflection of God. He describes “art, as practiced by believers, began as an act of harmony between God and man” (34). I did not really get any indication of the author telling us what to read, but when talking about what to write he says multiple times throughout the second chapter that “we have been blessed to be a blessing.” I took this as we must create what God has intended us to create. I could be misinterpreting that, but that is the gist of what I understood from these two essays. Overall, I did not get the impression that the author is TELLING his audience what a Christian should read or write, but he gives examples and evidence of what that looks like; he never says this is something you have to do, it is only how I have found the most fulfillment out of it. There also could have been some inconsistencies but I did not notice any of them, I thought a lot of his points were very valid and I did not ever find myself getting confused with most of what the author was trying to say.
