Here I am, the same place I was just yesterday looking at the same ocean, from the same sand underneath my bare feet, at the same exact spot. Something is different this time though. The water seems…blue, and not gray. The sand is comforting rather than painful, and this time I can actually feel my toes. Fewer layers on my body, but more sunshine in the sky. Carly shouts, “DRAGON” and starts waddling towards this giant log sticking out of the sand. She jumps on the log without any hesitation. We follow her with even less hesitation. Kyleigh is sitting right behind her on the log. I was standing with Nora on the ground because, well, I was scared to get on the log. I didn’t want to fall off.

We were all so distracted that we forget what waves do best. They move. My jeans are soaked despite the fact that I have them rolled up to my knees. My toes are covered in seafoam, which prior to this day I had never seen before. None of us can stop laughing. Nora and I are holding each others’ hands because we both have gotten the heaviest load of water on our legs.

After a few minutes, I decided to face my fear and get on the dragon. With the help of Kyleigh, I am sitting with the best balance that I can. I scoot further and further until my feet can no longer touch the sand. At that moment, in that very moment, while hearing the laughter behind me, and the waves crashing in front of me. I have learned the true meaning of beauty.
